The CEA at INES, ENEL Green Power and its Sicilian affiliate 3SUN, are in the race to develop the two-terminal perovskite-silicon tandem technology to achieve as fast as possible the highest efficiencies compatible with industrial process integration. They have set a new record for a PIN architecture cell with a conversion efficiency of 28.4% on 9 cm² with shading correction.
Tandem Perovskite-Silicon Enel Green Power and CEA achieve 28.4% efficiency for a 9 cm² cell
The trajectory is continuing at a sustained pace. For the year 2023 only, the CEA and 3SUN have already announced 26.5% in March, and 27.1% in June for the same type of PIN architecture tandem cell on 9cm² with shading correction. The year closes on a high note with this cell, certified by the European Commission JRC-ESTI at a conversion efficiency 24.4% equivalent to 28.4% with shading correction. Like the previous performance record, the device has an active surface area of ~ 9 cm² and a Voc of over 1900 mV.
Most of the efficiency records published internationally are for surfaces of 1cm². Our research teams are focused on simultaneously seeking the best efficiency and stability over time, on larger surfaces, to demonstrate the feasibility of industrialization as soon as possible.
The race for perovskite tandem cells on silicon with efficiencies above 30% on large areas is well under way. Stay tuned for our next results!
Tandem perovskite photovoltaic cells on silicon?
Reminder:
Perovskite (PK) materials have been causing a buzz in the scientific and industrial solar community since their photovoltaic properties were discovered in 2012. These materials represent an opportunity for a major technological breakthrough, opening the way for photovoltaic cells to achieve conversion efficiencies higher than 30%, at little extra cost, by combining them with a lower band-gap material such as silicon (Si), the so-called tandem approach. Scientific and technical progress is rapid in the field, with a certified world record currently held by LONGI at 33.9% (on 1cm²).
