The TILOS Horizon 2020 project, aiming to provide energy autonomy to the island of Tilos with the use of clean, renewable energy sources (RES) and battery storage, has won two of the most distinguished European Energy awards at EUSEW 2017, the first one in the new category of Energy Islands and the second one in the special Citizens' category! (cf. INES News #37).
Thanks to a 800kW wond turbine, a 160kW PV park and a 800kW/2.88MWh storage system, Tilos will be the first RES-battery storage hybrid power station and the first smart microgrid in an island of the Mediterranean.
The project is now entering its most critical phase as, during the coming weeks, installation of the wind turbine and the PV park will be completed, alongside the massive rollout of smart meter & DSM devices in the local residential sector. The hybrid energy system is expected to enter into trial operation by the end of September 2017, when the integrated battery storage system will also arrive onsite.
